Rej offered Brady what he hoped was an encouraging smile. The poor guy deserved enormous respect. Not many people in Alpha Prime two-niner could have accepted the situation with such relative calm, let alone agreed to help. This thread was notorious for its peculiar combination of skepticism and hysteria.
âLetâs take a look at wherever you found that costume.â
Brady nodded, the pumpkin wobbling on his shoulders. âThe attic. Thereâs a bunch of stuff up there.â
The hair lifted on Rejâs nape. âWhat sort of stuff?â
âFurniture, rolled-up carpets, old trunks.â Brady patted his vest. âThis tux was on a tailorâs dummy, and the⦠well⦠mask was on a shelf directly over it.â
âCan you take me up there?â
âUmâ¦â Brady scratched the top of his head, near the curl of the pumpkin stem. âI think? The stairs are pretty narrow. It was a challenge to get this thing down in the first place.â He straightened his shoulders. âBut Iâll try.â
Rej patted Bradyâs arm, wishing once again that he could get a little closer. âGood man.â
Brady led the way up the stairs to the second floor. He pointed to a narrow doorway at the end of the landing. âThat leads to the attic.â
Rej glanced from the door to the width of Bradyâs head. âYeah. I can see it would be a tight fit. If you would rather stay down hereââ
âNo. This is my house now. I need to know what else might be lying in wait for me.â He marched over and opened the door, which creaked ominously. âYou know, I laughed about that noise at first. I thought it was perfect for a haunted house. Pretty stupid, huh?â
âNot stupid. Itâs completely understandable to be delighted when something lives up to your dreams and expectations.â
Brady cast a quick glance at Rej, his eyes flaring withâcould that be heat as opposed to simple light? âThatâs⦠exactly what it was. Although now Iâm thinking I should just break out the WD-40 and call it a day, you know?â
He flipped a light switch on the wall and tried to step through the doorway, uttering a muffled curse when his head caught on the door frame. When he turned sideways, though, he was able to squeeze through, since the pumpkin wasnât as wide back-to-front as it was side-to-side. Once past the door, the stairwell walls widened, and he could face front to climb the stairsâgiving Rej another perfect view of his incredible backside.
Focus. The poor guyâs got enough to worry about without me hitting on him.
When Brady reached the top, he stood aside to let Rej step up beside him.
âWow.â Rej stared around him, his mouth ajar. The place was packed with shelves and boxes and trunks galoreâlining the walls, tucked into alcoves, even suspended from the ceiling.
âI know, right? Who knows what I'll discover up here? Itâs like a dragonâs hoard.â Brady propped his fists on his hips. âOr maybe just a hoarderâs hoard, considering the jumble, but still.â
Despite the apparent clutter, though, Rej could detect a definite organizational patternâone intended to look random, which was one of Gorvenathâs signatures.
